The Dynamics of Sphagnum in Forest and Peatland Communities in Southeastern Labrador, Canada
نویسنده
چکیده
Long fire rotation, high levels of precipitation, and acidic nature of the bedrock are factors contributing to the dominance of Sphagnum in many upland and peatland communities in southeastern Labrador. Vegetation development induced by local or regional environmental change frequently involves replacement of species assemblages of various bryophytes and lichens by species assemblages dominated by Sphagnum. In upland forests the successional sequence following fire often culminates in a carpet of Sphagnum girgensohnii overgrowing feather mosses. Similarly, following a change in the water table, Sphagnum lindbergii encroaches as a broad carpet over Cladopdiella fruituns and Gymnocoleu infraru on recently exposed mud bottoms in bog hollows. On bog hummocks, following fire or changes in the moisture regime, Sphagnumfuscum overtops Cladonia lichens to form a pronounced recurrence horizon.

Habitat heterogeneity and connectivity shape microbial communities in South American peatlands
Bacteria play critical roles in peatland ecosystems. However, very little is known of how habitat heterogeneity affects the structure of the bacterial communities in these ecosystems. Here, we used amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA and nifH genes to investigate phylogenetic diversity and bacterial community composition in three different sub-Antarctic peat bog aquatic habitats: Sphagnum magel...

Zoltai, S.C. 1995. Regional variations in peatland ecosystems of west-central Canada through time. Gunneria 70: 35-42. Peatland ecosystems respond to major changes in their environment induced by prolonged changes in climate. In the western boreal region of Canada, permafrost occurs only in Sphagnum-dominated peatlands. In the north, the palsas and peat plateaus are associated with well-defined...

This study was conducted to simultaneously investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of diatom communities inhabiting two microhabitat types (Sphagnum periphyton and epipelon) in a peatland area of the Czech Republic. The changes in diatom community structure and corresponding diversity indices at both large (i.e., variation between sites) and small (i.e., variation between two microhabitat...
متن کاملDynamics of Viral Abundance and Diversity in a Sphagnum-Dominated Peatland: Temporal Fluctuations Prevail Over Habitat
Viruses impact microbial activity and carbon cycling in various environments, but their diversity and ecological importance in Sphagnum-peatlands are unknown. Abundances of viral particles and prokaryotes were monitored bi-monthly at a fen and a bog at two different layers of the peat surface. Viral particle abundance ranged from 1.7 x 10(6) to 5.6 x 10(8) particles mL(-1), and did not differ b...
متن کاملThe role of cultural models in local perceptions of SFM--differences and similarities of interest groups from three boreal regions.
Differences in the way local and regional interest groups perceive Sustainable Forest Management in regions with different forest use histories were studied using Southeastern Finland, the Mauricie in Quebec and Central Labrador in Canada as examples of regions with high, medium and low importance of commercial forestry. We present a conceptual model illustrating the cyclic interaction between ...
